Riddle #3

These characters spill across pages.

A terror creeping in stages.

First a friend,

An ally staving the end.

Entertaining petty nerves,

At leisure to serve.

Then a bother,

A mutual admirer of your lover.

Forcing advance,

Since there’s no other chance.

Finally a pest,

Unforgiving at best

Too weary to plead.

Try, but never take the lead.
